Pileated Woodpecker

Posted on April 30, 2021July 5, 2021

This striking bird is a male Pileated Woodpecker. The females have a black stripe on their check whereas the males have a red stripe. I was upstairs working and saw him fly to one of our trees. I came out and slowly crept up to the tree, but there was no bird. Happily, he’d flown to a nearby tree with decent light and I spotted him before he spotted me.

Pileated Woodpeckers rely on standing dead trees and fallen logs for insects and for a place to nest. More information about these amazing birds can be found at the Cornell Labs site. Fun fact–the cartoon, Woody Woodpecker, used the Pileated Woodpecker as inspiration for the jaunty character.

About

I’m learning to see birds and their movement through the lens of a camera. I’m a new photographer surprised at the richness of detail the pictures provide. How I see and watch birds has changed forever.
