It was early morning as I headed to the dock to see if we had any crabs in our traps, when I saw a Great Egret fishing from branches over the water across the creek. Because we were at mid-tide, I hadn’t expected to see any of the egrets or herons fishing, because they like to wade out or fish from the shore exposed at low tide. When I saw this clever fellow I dashed back to get my camera. The sun was at my back, but largely blocked by trees so he was in the shade. Probably a good thing since bright light bouncing off these very white birds is a bit challenging to shoot. I use a fast exposure to capture the sudden and rapid fishing movements which helps, but it doesn’t take much to blowout a shot. This is one of my all-time favorites.
