I have never seen a Great Blue Heron pose like this. He spent quite a bit of time with this odd wing fold. Perhaps giving himself a bit of a stretch.

I love the feather detail and his feet and legs positioned for flight. Still amazes me to see these birds caught in a moment, up close. I see I made a mistake not getting the full 400 mm from the lens. With the zoom that I’m using now, I’ve got to make sure I have that set full zoom when I need it to be.

I didn’t see this bird fly to this tree perch, but easily caught sight of him while making my usual scan for birds. The sun was going down, but I got a handful of shots off while his face was lit. Good light is so important.
