I spotted this anhinga on a neighbor’s dock. What a surprise! They are very uncommon visitors to Virginia, preferring the warmth of the lower latitudes. The light head and neck identifies this bird as either a female or a juvenile. Male anhingas have a black head and neck.
Directly behind the anhinga was a large orange bulldozer that forced me to move to the far corner of our dock where some wasps live under the piling cap. I had forgotten about them until one started buzzing me as I waited for her to fly.
When she finally flew I was so very glad I had waited. My perseverance was definitely rewarded!
