Acorn Woodpeckers

Posted on May 16, 2022September 5, 2022

We are visiting a dear friend on the west coast and I spotted this family of Acorn Woodpeckers enjoying a home they’ve carved out from a high voltage power pole. They are quite a noisy bird and not very shy. A fun and easy target for my camera.

These birds were quite active on this power pole. The two on the left are females. I think the one on the right is as well, but I can’t see the red patch and where it sits. For females, the red is only on the very back of the head and for males, it is larger patch and extend over the top of the head.

Here’s a picture of a male and his larger red cap.

About

I’m learning to see birds and their movement through the lens of a camera. I’m a new photographer surprised at the richness of detail the pictures provide. How I see and watch birds has changed forever.
