Hummingbird Hover

Posted on July 18, 2020January 23, 2021

This photo of a ruby-throated hummingbird was taken as she was headed to a feeder. Where’s the ruby throat? On the males. Her little feet grab my eye. So calm while her wings are a flurry of motion.

On most of the U.S. East coast, if you see a hummingbird it’s almost certain to be a ruby-throated. If you live in the western U.S., there are several other species of these tiny powerhouses that are plentiful.

This was my first time really working shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. I like the shallow depth of field that provided a great background. A faster shutter and some better light would improve this shot.

About

I’m learning to see birds and their movement through the lens of a camera. I’m a new photographer surprised at the richness of detail the pictures provide. How I see and watch birds has changed forever.
